After the Civil War when Unitarian leadership targeted Western fields as the most promising for planting enlightened religion, few men stepped forward to take on the grueling and low paying job of organizing and tending new congregations. This opened the way for some amazing women to move in and build new churches and serve these growing communities. The Iowa Sisterhood was born…but could it last?
