The current controversy engulfing Hamline University about an art history professor who showed a famous painting depicting the Prophet Muhammad raises important questions about Western views of the Islamic tradition. While the university administration charged the professor with being Islamophobic, it is ironically the university, in its understandable effort to show respect for Islam, that unwittingly reproduced a harmful Islamic stereotype. How can we learn to appreciate the Islamic tradition without falling into the same trap? Luther College professor of religion Bob Shedinger will be our speaker. Following the service there will be a fellowship meeting where we will vote on adopting the 8th Principle.
