As we celebrate our 20th anniversary as the Decorah UU, we honor all the effort and love that went into founding our small congregation. Our history as a faith tradition goes back even further, as some of you know. The building which currently houses the Elks Club was built in 1890 to be the first permanent home of the Unitarians who called it Unity Church. After dwindling membership made it difficult for the congregation to keep the building, it was sold to the Elks in 1912.

We had a large gathering there for our 10th anniversary in 2015, and some of you were with us at that time. This year, we are planning a smaller event so we can recall some of the early history of UUs in Decorah.

On Saturday, January 25, before our celebration service the next day on Sunday, we invite you to join us at the Elks. Joe Bouska has agreed to open it for us, and the bar will be open from 5-7pm for drinks. We will be able to browse downstairs to see all the photos of early Decorah, including the Unitarian Church as it was then, and also look upstairs where the sanctuary was located.
